Split ACs and window ACs both cool a room, but they're built very differently — and that affects how they are evaluated and collected when you sell them. If you're about to approach a used AC buyer in Mumbai, understanding these differences will help you share the right details and plan pickup more easily.
How the two types are built
Window AC
A window AC is a single box. The compressor, condenser coil, evaporator coil, fans and controls all sit inside one cabinet that fits into a window or wall opening. Half of the unit faces indoors and half faces outside.
Split AC
A split AC has two separate units. The indoor unit is mounted on a wall inside the room, and the outdoor unit — holding the compressor and condenser — sits outside on a ledge, bracket, balcony or terrace. They are connected by copper pipes, wiring and a drain pipe.
Evaluation differences
Evaluating a window AC
Because everything is in one box, a window AC is straightforward to evaluate. A few photos of the front, the back (if visible) and the label usually tell the buyer most of what they need to know. Key questions are:
- Does it cool, and how well?
- How old is it, and what is the brand and capacity?
- How much rust is on the rear section?
Window ACs are often older, since many households have switched to split ACs. Older window units are frequently evaluated for their materials, though a working unit may still be reusable.
Evaluating a split AC
A split AC needs two sets of information — one for each unit. Buyers want to know:
- Are both indoor and outdoor units available?
- Is it an inverter or fixed-speed model?
- What condition is the outdoor unit in — rust, fin damage, compressor working?
- Is the connecting copper pipe included?
The outdoor unit usually carries most of the value because it contains the compressor. An indoor unit on its own is worth considerably less.
Uninstallation and collection differences
Window AC collection
Removing a window AC generally means taking off the front panel or fixings and sliding the unit out of its frame. The unit is heavy, so it should be handled carefully, especially on upper floors. Once removed, the opening needs covering.
Split AC collection
Split AC removal involves more steps: disconnecting the pipes and wiring, taking down the indoor unit from its wall bracket, and removing the outdoor unit from wherever it's mounted. In Mumbai, outdoor units are often on narrow ledges or grills outside upper-floor windows, which can make access harder. Tell the buyer exactly where the outdoor unit is.
Side-by-side comparison
| Aspect | Window AC | Split AC |
|---|---|---|
| Number of units | One | Two (indoor + outdoor) |
| Photos needed | Front, back, label | Both units, label, pipe |
| Where most value sits | Whole unit | Outdoor unit |
| Uninstallation | Simpler | More steps, access dependent |
| Typical age when sold | Often older | Wide range |
| Inverter option | Less common | Common |
Details to share for each type
For a window AC
- Brand, capacity and approximate age.
- Working condition.
- Photos of the front, back and label.
- Whether it is still fitted in the window or wall.
For a split AC
- Brand, model, capacity and approximate age.
- Inverter or fixed-speed.
- Working condition.
- Photos of both units and the label.
- Where the outdoor unit is installed and how it can be reached.
- Whether the copper pipe is available.
A note on inverter split ACs
Inverter technology is far more common in split ACs than in window units. If your split AC is an inverter model, mention it clearly, along with the star rating and any history of control board repairs. Inverter units depend on their electronics, so this information helps the buyer judge whether the unit can be reused or should be evaluated for materials.
Which is easier to sell?
Window ACs are generally simpler to evaluate and remove, while split ACs need more coordination. But both sell readily — the important thing is giving the buyer complete, accurate information. For more detail, see our dedicated split AC buyer and window AC buyer pages.
