How Much Is a Second-Hand AC Worth in Mumbai?

The factors that decide what a used AC is worth — brand, age, capacity, condition and more.

Before you get started

"How much will I get for my AC?" is the first question most sellers ask. It's a fair question, but there isn't a single answer. Second-hand AC value in Mumbai depends on a combination of factors, and two ACs bought in the same year can be worth quite different amounts. This article explains what buyers look at, so you can understand your AC's value before you enquire.

We deliberately don't quote prices here. Values change with demand, the condition of individual units and the market for metals, so any figure published today could mislead you tomorrow.

Two ways a used AC is valued

Every second-hand AC is evaluated in one of two broad ways:

  • As a reusable unit — if it works well, or can be brought back to working condition.
  • For its materials — if it's too old, damaged or incomplete to reuse.

A reusable AC is generally worth more than one valued only for scrap, so the first thing any buyer wants to know is whether the AC works.

Factors that affect second-hand AC value

Working condition

This is the biggest factor. An AC that cools a room quickly and runs quietly is in a strong position. One that cools weakly may need servicing or a gas top-up, which buyers factor in. A non-working AC is usually valued mainly for its parts.

Age

Newer ACs are generally worth more. As units age, their efficiency drops, parts wear out and buyers become more cautious about reuse. An approximate purchase year is enough for an evaluation.

Brand and model

ACs from well-known brands are often easier to reuse, and spare parts are easier to find. The model number also tells the buyer the capacity, generation and features of the unit.

Capacity

Common household capacities such as 1 and 1.5 ton are widely used, which helps reusability. Higher-capacity units have bigger compressors and coils, which can matter more when the unit is valued for materials.

Inverter or fixed-speed

Inverter ACs are popular because they're more energy-efficient. A working inverter AC can be attractive for reuse. However, inverter units depend on electronic control boards, so any history of board faults should be mentioned.

Star rating

The energy label shows the unit's efficiency at the time of manufacture. A higher-rated working unit is generally more appealing.

Physical condition

Yellowed or cracked plastic, rusted outdoor cabinets, bent condenser fins and broken louvres all reduce value. Mumbai's humidity and salty sea air can speed up corrosion, especially on outdoor units.

Completeness

For split ACs, having both indoor and outdoor units is important. The remote, the outdoor stand and the copper connecting pipe also add to the value.

Service and repair history

Regular servicing suggests the AC was looked after. Major repairs, especially compressor replacement, should be disclosed.

Quick reference: what raises and lowers value

Usually raises valueUsually lowers value
Working and cooling wellNot working or cooling weakly
Newer unitVery old unit
Known brand, common capacityUnclear model information
Both units, remote and pipe presentMissing outdoor unit or parts
Clean, rust-free bodyHeavy rust, cracks, damaged fins

What about scrap value?

When an AC can't be reused, its value comes from its compressor, copper and aluminium coils, steel body and motors. Scrap value depends on the coil material, whether the compressor is present and current metal rates. Our article on old AC scrap price in Mumbai covers this in detail.

How to get an accurate evaluation

  1. Note the brand, model, capacity and approximate age.
  2. Test whether the AC cools, and how well.
  3. Take clear photos of both units and the label.
  4. Be upfront about faults and repairs.
  5. Share your area and access details for pickup.

With this information, a buyer can give you an evaluation that's close to the final amount. If anything differs at pickup, the amount may be revised — so accuracy helps you.

Should you sell now or wait?

Generally, an AC loses value with time. Each monsoon can add rust, and each year adds age. If you've already replaced your AC, selling the old one sooner is usually better than storing it.
