Most people don't sell an AC because it has died. They sell because it has become old: it takes longer to cool the room, makes more noise, needs gas refilling more often, or simply uses more power than a newer model. As an old AC buyer in Mumbai, we see a lot of units in this middle stage — still running, but no longer worth keeping.
Signs it may be time to sell your old AC
- Higher electricity bills in summer compared with earlier years, with no change in usage.
- Frequent servicing or gas top-ups that keep adding to running costs.
- Weak cooling during Mumbai's humid months, even after servicing.
- Rust and corrosion on the outdoor unit, common in coastal and high-humidity areas.
- Older refrigerant models for which servicing is becoming less convenient.
When the cost of running and maintaining an old AC starts to add up, selling it and putting the money towards a replacement often makes more sense than continuing repairs.
Old window ACs and old split ACs
Old window ACs
Many Mumbai flats still have older window ACs fitted into a wall cut-out or window frame. These are self-contained, which makes them simpler to evaluate. Even if the cooling is weak, the unit has a compressor, copper and aluminium coils, and a metal body. See more on our window AC buyer page.
Old split ACs
For older split ACs, the outdoor unit carries most of the material value because it houses the compressor and condenser coil. Whether both units are available, and where the outdoor unit is installed, matter for both the evaluation and pickup. More details are on our split AC buyer page.
How old ACs are evaluated
An old AC can be bought either as a usable unit or for its material value, depending on its condition. We look at:
- Approximate age and brand.
- Whether it still cools, cools weakly, or doesn't work at all.
- The condition of the compressor, coils and body.
- Whether the unit is complete, or parts have been removed.
If an old AC is past the point of reuse, it is evaluated as scrap. Our old AC scrap price page explains what affects scrap value.
Selling an old AC: what to send us
A quick WhatsApp message with these details is enough to start:
- AC type (window or split) and approximate capacity in tons.
- Brand and approximate age.
- Current condition — working, weak cooling, or not working.
- Two or three photos, including the brand sticker if possible.
- Your locality and floor.

Frequently asked questions
How old can an AC be for you to buy it?
There is no strict age limit. Very old units that are no longer usable are evaluated for their material value, while newer old units may be evaluated as reusable.
My old AC uses an older refrigerant gas. Will you still buy it?
Yes, you can still enquire. Share the brand, age and photos, and we will evaluate it based on its condition and components.
Is it better to repair or sell an old AC?
That depends on the repair cost and the age of the unit. If repairs are frequent and the AC is many years old, selling it and replacing it is often worth considering.
