When an air conditioner can no longer be used, its value doesn't disappear — it shifts to the materials inside. Copper, aluminium, steel and the compressor can all be recovered and recycled. But the old AC scrap price in Mumbai isn't a fixed number. It depends on the specific unit and the market for metals at the time. Here's what affects it, so you know what to expect when you sell.
What's inside an AC that has scrap value?
An air conditioner is made of several materials, each with its own scrap value:
- Compressor — a sealed steel shell with copper motor windings inside.
- Condenser coil — in the outdoor unit or the rear of a window AC.
- Evaporator coil — inside the indoor unit or the front of a window AC.
- Copper connecting pipes — linking the indoor and outdoor units of a split AC.
- Fan motors — containing copper windings.
- Steel cabinet and frame.
- Wiring, control boards and plastic.
The main factors affecting scrap value
1. Whether the compressor is present
The compressor is the heaviest part of most ACs and a major contributor to scrap value. An AC with its compressor removed is worth noticeably less. If someone has already taken it out, mention it when you enquire.
2. Copper vs aluminium coils
Traditionally, AC coils used copper tubes with aluminium fins. Some newer and budget models use aluminium tubes as well. Copper generally carries more scrap value than aluminium, so the coil material makes a real difference. You may not know which your AC has — the model number and photos of the coil usually help identify it.
3. Completeness
A complete unit is easier to value. For split ACs, both the indoor and outdoor units should ideally be available. Missing copper pipes, motors or panels reduce the recoverable material.
4. Size and type
Larger-capacity ACs tend to have bigger compressors and coils. A window AC holds its compressor and both coils in one box, while a split AC's material is spread across two units, with most of it in the outdoor unit.
5. Condition
Severe rust, crushed coils or broken housings can reduce the amount of usable material. Mild rust is common in Mumbai and doesn't stop a unit from being bought.
6. Metal market rates
Scrap value follows the market prices of copper, aluminium and steel, which move over time. This is the main reason no responsible buyer can promise a fixed "per ton" or "per kg" AC scrap rate that stays valid for long.
Scrap vs reusable: know which category your AC is in
Before treating your AC as scrap, consider whether it might still be reusable. A working or repairable unit is often worth more than its materials. Here's a rough guide:
| Situation | Likely category |
|---|---|
| Working, reasonable age | Reusable — see second-hand AC buyer |
| Minor fault, repairable | May be evaluated above scrap |
| Compressor failed, very old or badly damaged | Scrap |
| Parts missing | Scrap, based on what remains |
Why you shouldn't dismantle the AC yourself
Some people remove the copper pipes or compressor to sell separately. We don't recommend it:
- Safety: the sealed system contains refrigerant under pressure. Cutting lines can cause injury.
- Environment: releasing refrigerant into the air is harmful.
- Value: a complete unit is simpler to evaluate, and partial dismantling can damage recoverable parts.
How to get a scrap evaluation
- Share the AC type, brand, capacity and approximate age.
- Send photos of the whole unit, the outdoor unit and the label.
- Mention any missing parts or known faults.
- Receive an evaluation based on your details and current conditions.
- The final amount is confirmed when the unit is seen at pickup.
Be cautious of fixed price claims
If you see a fixed scrap rate quoted for all ACs, treat it as a rough marketing figure rather than a promise. The actual amount for your unit will still depend on its compressor, coils, completeness and the market.
